He was an articulate witness to the changes that took place in America and especially on universities in the 1960s. He went on to study blue-collar workers at the automobile plants in Michigan and developed a concept for work he called “new work”. He also wrote the popular books “On Being Free” and “The Experience Of Values”. I interviewed him in 1989 for my TV series looking at the 1960s. He was a lifelong newspaperman and the editor of the Adair County Free Press (now part of the Carroll Daily Times). I conducted this interview with him in 1989 speaking about the 1950s and 1960s. His ancestors started the newspaper 125 years before he and his brother sold it later in their lives. I was trying to get perspective from Americans of all stripes and he felt he was painting a picture of the way most of the folks in this town felt back then.

Ronald Reagan kept pointing them out as there were many hippies presenting themselves at various kinds of political events in California while he was governor. #ronaldreagan

I saw it in my first year of high school in 1955. Most of us middle class kids in suburbia related to what it was saying but as the 1950s came to a close, more or less began to realize that this experience was not the case for all Americans. #capitalism #freeenterprise

He grew up in the 1950s and became a passionate observer and analyst and writer focused on that era. He is a Fulbright professor of history at the University of Maryland. He has written 11 books. I found his perspective uniquely fascinating because he grew up as a middle-class white kid in suburbia and continues to analyze his experience and the generation that came from 1950s suburban America. #suburbia #1950s #middleclass
